Dr. Janet Hsiao is an associate professor in the Department of Psychology and the State Key Laboratory of Brain and Cognitive Sciences at University of Hong Kong. She received her Ph.D. from University of Edinburgh and was a postdoctoral researcher at University of California San Diego. She is most widely known for her computational approaches to the research on perceptual expertise acquisition, especially through neural network modeling and Eye Movement analysis with Hidden Markov Models (EMHMM). Her research investigates universal principles and specifics underlying face recognition and word reading and factors that modulate the acquisition processes including individual differences and expertise in other domains. Her proposal of EMHMM to quantify individual differences in eye movement pattern has revolutionized how eye movements are used to understand cognition. She is an associate editor of the journal Cognitive Science and has been on the program committee for Cog Sci since 2016.
