In complement to the majority of vision research concerned with how we process single objects in isolated, static contexts, I investigate how the visual system integrates statistical regularities inherent in the surrounding environment using a variety of psychophysical, eye tracking, and neuroimaging techniques. Abstracting these principles to broader contexts such as signal detection has great potential for applied solutions to real-world, safety-critical problems, such as boosting rare-target detection in human observers beyond what can currently be achieved by state-of-the art algorithms (e.g., tumors in mammograms and weapons in baggage scans).
